California dog owners who bought Cosequin joint supplements between 2016 and 2022 can claim up to $150 from an $11.5 million settlement – file by July 21
According to Nutramax Laboratories’ own marketing, Cosequin is the top-selling joint supplement brand at pet retailers nationwide, and millions of dog owners have bought it hoping to ease their pets’ stiff hips and creaky knees. Now, California residents who purchased certain Cosequin dog products between May 2016 and May 2022 can collect cash from an $11.5 million class action settlement. The claims deadline was July 21, 2025, and payouts run as high as $150 per household.
The settlement resolves Guttmann v. Nutramax Laboratories, a lawsuit filed in California alleging that Nutramax Laboratories, Inc. overstated the joint health benefits of its Cosequin dog supplements. The products contain glucosamine and chondroitin, ingredients widely marketed for joint support but whose effectiveness in dogs has been debated in veterinary research. Nutramax has not admitted any wrongdoing as part of the agreement.
Who qualifies and what you can get
You are eligible if you live in California and bought covered Cosequin dog products for your own pet between May 3, 2016, and May 6, 2022. Purchases made for resale or commercial use do not count, and the settlement does not cover buyers in other states or Cosequin products made for cats or horses.
Covered products include several formulations sold under the Cosequin brand name at pet stores, veterinary clinics, and online retailers such as Amazon and Chewy. A full list of qualifying products is posted on the official settlement website.
Payouts are split into two tiers:
- With proof of purchase (receipts, order confirmations, or similar records showing qualifying purchases): up to $150.
- Without proof of purchase: a smaller flat payment, with the exact amount determined by how many total claims are filed against the fund.
If valid claims exceed what the fund can cover after attorneys’ fees and administrative costs are deducted, individual payments will be reduced proportionally. That is standard for class action settlements of this size.
How to file a claim
All claims were to be submitted through CosequinDogSettlement.com, which hosts the court-approved claim form, a list of covered products, and detailed instructions. Claimants needed to provide a name, a California address, and details about purchases. Uploading receipts or order confirmations strengthened a claim and could qualify the filer for the higher payout tier.
The deadline to submit was July 21, 2025. Late or incomplete submissions may have been rejected.
Settlement materials are available in both English and Spanish. If you prefer Spanish-language documents, the Spanish-language notice is available through the settlement’s distribution channels.
What the lawsuit alleged
The plaintiffs argued that Nutramax’s advertising suggested Cosequin delivered specific joint health benefits that were not adequately backed by scientific evidence. Pet supplement makers are not required to get FDA approval before selling their products, which means marketing claims can outpace the research behind them. That gap between promise and proof was at the heart of this case.
Nutramax agreed to settle for $11.5 million rather than continue litigating. That is a common calculation in consumer class actions, where companies weigh years of legal costs against a one-time payout. The settlement should not be read as a finding that Cosequin products are unsafe or ineffective. Courts approve these agreements based on whether the terms are fair to class members, not on a final ruling about the underlying claims.
The exact split of the $11.5 million between consumer payments, attorneys’ fees, and administrative costs will be outlined in the court’s final approval order. As of May 2026, the total number of claims filed has not been publicly disclosed, so it remains unclear whether payouts will hit the $150 ceiling or be adjusted downward.
Where the settlement stands now that the claims window has closed
The July 21, 2025, claims deadline has passed. If you filed before that date, payment timelines depend on when the court issues final approval and how quickly the settlement administrator processes distributions, a process that often stretches several months past the claims deadline.
This settlement applies only to California purchasers. Dog owners in other states are not part of this class, and no comparable nationwide settlement has been announced as of May 2026.
Whether the payout lands at $30 or $150, it is money California consumers are entitled to under a court-approved agreement. Those who filed can check the status of their claims at CosequinDogSettlement.com.
